Arcade is pleased to present Mitchell Asquith's exhibition "In Between the Before and After".

Asquith’s paintings center upon the figure oscillating between a state of becoming and dissipation. His body of work produces a psychological image of the human form in a flux of estrangement, between the outer topography of flesh and the mind beneath, struggling to conform to the transient conditions of the body. Each portrait becomes a collage of mental states, bereft of stability and adrift upon the momentum of change. Haunted by mortality and plagued by manic self-scrutiny, moments of torment and melancholia are dislocated by fleeting spasms of exhilaration, exaltation and the ecstasy of letting go, in a world where nothing is unchanging and no one is exempt. Between each polarity is a window into a self that is divided, held hostage by fleeting appearances and at the mercy of incoherent perceptions.

Moving through beauty and abjection, harmony and tension, representation and abstraction, Asquith’s work ultimately serves as a mediation on coming undone and existing on the precipice between the before and after.

Mitchell Asquith is a painter living and working in Melbourne, Australia. He completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts at Monash University in 2013.
