Do you remember the excitement of looking through a kaleidoscope or a pair of binoculars as a kid? The very unique and intimate relationship those viewing devices create with the image generates a lasting memory and triggers nostalgia.
For this exhibition, Emilie Walsh presents a couple of viewing machines giving access to short narratives that play with the imagination of adventure. What might Moby Dick tell us in under a minute? What happens on a desert island, when the imagination becomes unleashed? Looking through Walsh's adventure-machines, one might get a peep into the lost world of the fantasy of exploration.
Emilie Walsh is a Melbourne based artist working across a range of media including photography, video, animation, drawing, printmaking and installation. Emilie has a Master in Fine Arts from the University of Marseille in France. She is currently undertaking a PhD at the VCA. Her practice focuses on narratives of adventure and our nostalgic relationship to the imagination of exploration.
