INTERMATTER is a collaborative project by Mark Hoffman and Catarina Mil-Homens.

“Something big can often come out of something quite small…” - this is something one often hears said.

When it comes to collaborative art practice it often helps to take the word small in a non-objective sense.

Putting pen to paper, for example, is a very small act when taken simply in and of itself. But if two people begin to make marks together the performance becomes about something which is almost entirely other or else.

The word Diaphone is used to describe a style of two-part polyphonic singing; organum or freer form resembling it. The term Diaphony was also understood in classical Greece as something which referred to an auditory form of social dissonance.

With INTERMATTER Mark Hoffman and Catarina Mil-Homens will use the Arcade site to install a Diaphonic drawing. Each artist will create a registration of time and place, located a-part in sounding space, to reveal some trace of an intermaterial presence that moves beyond the practical constraints of making.

The work will exist then as a kind of performative score for an open encounter with something more, almost songlike in its want to give a moment of shared experience. The imposition of meaning gets delayed as the act of listening is forever remade over as an instrument of poetry and resistance.

Mark and Catarina completed Master of Fine Arts degrees at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2015. Prior to this and since each artist has shown individual works in Melbourne, interstate and overseas galleries.
