Artist Statment-
Through the tradition of fine art photography, the concrete form has often been used to symbolise structured and restrictive social forces. The concrete form, typically represented through an objective aesthetic, has come to represent those aspects of society that are inert, pervasive and oppressive.
The Concrete series alters that representation by departing from typical modes of representation. The works depict a graceful concrete form, cropped to strip the object of function and shot from an angle to emphasise light and shadow. The series includes several images of the structure, shot in an identical way at various times of the day and in varying weather conditions. As a series, the images suggest that the concrete form is inert only when the inevitabilities of place and time are negated.
The works reflect a gradual shift away from the regimentation of Modern societies and towards a less homogenised and more interactive contemporary awareness.
