'Destination Strange' is an installation-based artwork that examines “exoticised place” (often portrayed through the screen in social media, advertising, tourism and film) as a veil between authentic and inauthentic experience. With a focus on the natural world, the work uses the central motif of masking, to present an idiosyncratic construction of place, shaped by the visual tropes and clichés of contemporary travel.
In the work, nature and artifice entwine in mask-like sculptural structures, animated photographic landscapes and fractured painted surfaces, presenting a seductive and exotic reality. The odd assemblage of images and forms circumvent notions of nature lost in spectacle, technology and flux.
Imbued with humour, fantasy and unease,' Destination Strange' aims to draw together the lack of our own authentic construction as we encounter the world, in favour of controlling an image.
